Alfajores

by Cake Culture
Cakes
Alfajores are some of the most prevalent sweet specialty in Argentina. They are a type of cookie made of two sweet cornstarch biscuits joined together with dulce de leche. You will find alfajores coated with dark or white chocolate, or simply covered with coconut or sugar powder. These Argentinian cookies can be eaten for breakfast, as a dessert at lunch or dinner, or as a snack to accompany the tea, coffee or mate (traditional drink of Argentina).

The wife sold herself as a slave in exchange for money to buy medicine for her father-in-law. Once the husband learned about what his wife did, he made a cake filled with sweetened winter melon and almond. He dedicated this pastry to his wife, whom he could never forget, and sold it in the street. His cake became so popular that he was able to earn enough money to buy his wife back.
